CBD for Pets: What the Research Says About Safety and Benefits

The pet CBD market is projected to exceed $1.1 billion by 2025 — and the growth is not driven purely by marketing. Veterinary researchers and animal behaviorists have been studying cannabidiol in companion animals for nearly a decade, with some of the most compelling results coming from peer-reviewed university studies. If you are considering CBD for your dog or cat, here is what the science actually shows about safety, efficacy, and appropriate use.

Do pets have an endocannabinoid system?

Yes — and this is foundational to understanding why CBD may help animals at all. All mammals, including dogs and cats, have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) structurally similar to the human ECS. The ECS regulates pain, inflammation, anxiety, appetite, immune function, and sleep across species. Dogs in particular have a high density of CB1 receptors in the brain and cerebellum — which is relevant both to CBD's potential benefits and to the reason THC is toxic to dogs at doses that humans tolerate. CBD, which does not bind directly to CB1 receptors in the same way as THC, does not carry this toxicity risk at appropriate doses.

What does the research show for dogs?

CBD for canine osteoarthritis pain: Cornell University study

One of the most cited peer-reviewed studies on CBD in dogs was conducted at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (2018). Researchers gave dogs with osteoarthritis either 2mg/kg of CBD oil or placebo twice daily for four weeks in a randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover trial. The results were significant: CBD-treated dogs showed a significant decrease in pain scores and significant increase in mobility as assessed by veterinarians using validated pain scales. 80% of dogs receiving CBD showed clinical improvement. No significant side effects were observed beyond a mild elevation in alkaline phosphatase (a liver enzyme), which resolved after treatment. (Reference: Gamble L. et al. Frontiers in Veterinary Science. 2018. PMID: 30513600.)

CBD for canine epilepsy: Colorado State University

A 2019 randomized, blinded, controlled clinical trial at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences examined CBD for dogs with treatment-resistant epilepsy. Dogs received 2.5mg/kg of CBD oil twice daily or placebo alongside their existing anticonvulsant medications for 12 weeks. The CBD group showed an 89% reduction in seizure frequency compared to the placebo group — a clinically and statistically significant finding. Seizure-free periods were also longer in the CBD group. CBD for canine anxiety: behavioral research

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons pet owners turn to CBD for their dogs — separation anxiety, noise phobia (thunderstorms, fireworks), and generalized fearfulness are widespread issues. A 2023 study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science examined CBD's effects on stress responses in dogs exposed to a stress-inducing model. The CBD-treated group showed significantly lower stress indicators including heart rate variability differences and behavioral measures compared to placebo. While research in this area is earlier-stage than pain and epilepsy, the existing behavioral data aligns with CBD's documented anxiolytic mechanisms in mammals generally.

What about cats?

The research base for cats is smaller than for dogs, but growing. Cats metabolize cannabinoids differently from dogs and humans — they lack certain liver enzymes (specifically, they are poor glucuronidators) that affect how they process some compounds. Early feline studies suggest CBD at appropriate doses is well-tolerated, but cats may be more sensitive to dosing errors. A 2021 study in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery found that cats given CBD oil (2mg/kg twice daily) showed no significant adverse effects over 4 weeks, and some owners reported improvements in activity and apparent comfort. More research is ongoing. Pet-specific formulations with veterinary dosing guidance are strongly recommended for cats.

Safety considerations: what to look for

THC is toxic to pets — zero THC is essential

This is the most critical safety distinction for pet CBD products. Dogs have a very high density of CB1 receptors in the brain, making them far more sensitive to THC than humans. THC toxicity in dogs can cause disorientation, ataxia (loss of coordination), urine leaking, vomiting, tremors, and in severe cases seizures. Any CBD product given to a pet must be confirmed to contain zero detectable THC — verified by third-party lab testing with a certificate of analysis (COA). Full-spectrum products intended for human use — even with trace 0.3% THC — should never be used for pets without veterinary guidance.

Third-party lab testing

The pet supplement market is lightly regulated, which means CBD content on labels is often inaccurate. A 2017 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that only 31% of CBD products tested contained the amount of CBD stated on the label. For pet products, always request a certificate of analysis from a third-party laboratory that verifies: actual CBD content per serving, absence of THC, and absence of pesticides, heavy metals, and solvents.

Dosing: start low and go slow

The most consistently studied effective doses in canine research are in the range of 2mg/kg twice daily. For a 25-pound (11kg) dog, that is approximately 22mg of CBD per dose. Most veterinary researchers recommend starting at the lower end (1mg/kg) and titrating up over 2 to 4 weeks based on observed response. Always consult your veterinarian before starting CBD, particularly if your pet is on other medications — CBD can affect how the liver processes certain drugs through CYP450 enzyme inhibition.

What conditions have the most evidence

Based on the current peer-reviewed literature, the strongest evidence for CBD in pets exists for: osteoarthritis pain and mobility (Cornell 2018 — strong RCT evidence), epilepsy seizure reduction (Colorado State 2019 — strong RCT evidence), and anxiety and stress responses (emerging behavioral evidence, earlier-stage). Evidence for other conditions — including cancer support, skin conditions, and gastrointestinal issues — is largely anecdotal or very early-stage. This does not mean CBD cannot help in those cases, but the evidence threshold is lower.

Tonify Pets CBD Oil

Tonify's Pets CBD Oil 300mg is formulated specifically for companion animals, with a pet-appropriate concentration and a certificate of analysis confirming CBD content and the absence of THC and contaminants. As with all Tonify products, it is third-party lab tested. We recommend consulting your veterinarian to determine the appropriate dose for your pet's weight and condition.
